Visualizing Data: Exploring Design, Neutrality, and Interpretation
The third lecture of the Specializing Master in Service Design focused on Data Analysis and Visualization, led by Paolo Ciuccarelli and Alessandra Facchin. This module introduced students to a designerly approach to data representation, exploring the role of design in shaping and making sense of information.
Through a combination of theory, collective discussions, and case studies, students reflected on the nature of data, its possible interpretations, and how visualization can make information more accessible to different stakeholders. Key concepts such as visual variables, graphic patterns, and visual transformations were explored to create hybrid data experiences that merge analytical and narrative elements.
A particular focus was placed on designing visualization tools for different contexts and the importance of balancing neutrality and autonomy when working with data. The session concluded with a workshop, where students applied the concepts learned by designing visual artifacts based on specific user, context, and purpose combinations.
